On November 19th 2020, IO Interactive released a teaser that revealed they were working on a brand new game based on the James Bond franchise, with a working title of Project 007. And in a recent interview with Danish public service site DR, CEO of IO Interactive, Hakan Abrak, gave us a bit more insight into this new game from the Hitman developers.
“It’s very, very special – a boy’s dream. Sometimes it’s still a little difficult comprehending that we’re making James Bond” Abrak tells DR, understandably excited about this new project based on Ian Fleming’s martini-sipping MI6 agent.
While he doesn’t tell DR anything specific about the gameplay or story beats of the game, Abrak does reveal that it will not be based on any of the 24 movies produced by Albert Broccoli’s EON Productions. Project 007, as it’s currently known, will be a whole new adventure for the British super spy.
It also looks like the game will be completely fresh as it won’t be basing this Bond on any previous actors, “We’ve been allowed to make our own digital Bond, one that doesn’t lean towards any previous Bond actor. We’re making a completely original story, and you can easily imagine a trilogy coming from it“.
Abrak mentions that he expects the company to double in size from 200 to 400 within the next few years, with work on Project 007 to be split between IO’s two offices, located in Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmö, Sweden respectively. He also tells DR that he has great confidence in Project 007.
“We are very committed to making a high quality game that young people all over the world will fall in love with. And I’m sure we will”.
IO Interactive was formed in 1998, with their first game Hitman: Codename 47 releasing in the year 2000 to solid sales. Their most recent effort, Hitman 3, hit storefronts only a week ago and released to critical acclaim.
At the time of writing, Project 007 has no estimated release date but is said to be in active development.
