Ghost of Tsushima film adaptation to be directed by John Wick’s Chad Stahelski
It seems like the game-to-movie adaptation train isn’t slowing down any time soon, as it’s been announced that yet another recent gaming juggernaut has been chosen for silver screen stardom, and that’s Ghost of Tsushima.
In a Deadline article released on March 25th, it was officially announced that film production company 87Eleven Entertainment will be adapting Ghost of Tsushima, with Chad Stahelski set to direct.
Developed by PlayStation stalwarts, Sucker Punch Productions, Ghost of Tsushima sees players take control of Jin Sakai, a lone samurai warrior, as he must find a way of freeing the Japanese island of Tsushima from villainous forces. The game was released in July of 2020 to critical and commercial acclaim, earning a critic score of 83/100 on Metacritic, with an audience score of 9.2/10. The game has also sold over 6.5 million copies worldwide since its debut, making it one of the fastest-selling original IPs in Playstation’s history.
In a quote within the Deadline article, Playstation Productions head Asad Qizilbash makes it clear that he’s very excited about this project, saying:
“We’re excited to be partnering with Chad and 87Eleven Entertainment, to bring their vision of Jin’s story to the big screen. We love working with creative partners like Chad, who have a passion for our games, ensuring we can create rich adaptations that will excite our fans and new audiences.”
Chad Stahelski (born 1968) is a former Hollywood stuntman, having worked on big movies such as the Matrix trilogy, The Hunger Games, Die Hard 4, and many others. But in more recent years he has seemingly backed away a little from stuntwork to focus on directing. So far he’s directed the first three John Wick movies, starring Keanu Reeves, and is set to be doing the series’ fourth instalment as well. So we can probably assume that production on Jin Sakai’s big-screen debut would occur sometime after that.
At the time of writing, the Ghost of Tsushima movie does not have an estimated release date.
