In just under two months, Insomniac Games’ latest entry in the Ratchet and Clank franchise comes to the Playstation 5. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was announced during Playstation’s State of Play showcase in 2020 and sees the famous Lobax and his robotic sidekick travel through various dimensions. However, the end of the trailer introduced fans to a new, purple Lombax. And the first detail revealed on 26th April 2021 via the official Playstation blog was the name of this character!
As well as this, Playstation released a gameplay trailer, as well as announcing that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will have its own State of Play presentation on 29th April. So, a lot of announcements have finally happened! The first aspect to note about the gameplay trailer is the soundtrack, with the score composed by Mark Mothersbaugh. He’s most notable for his musical score on the Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter trilogies as well as The Rugrats Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and The Lego Movie. I think he’s a perfect addition to the game.
The story and gameplay mechanics are also revealed in the trailer. After Dr. Nefarious rips a hole in the fabric of reality in order to find a timeline where he is triumphant, Clank meets Rivet and must reunite with Ratchet in this new dimension. While there are similarities to Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, I’m always happy to see video games deal with various timelines and dimensions in their story, so I’m very excited to see what strange new worlds will be available to explore here.
As I mentioned, this trailer also reveals the name of the new Lombax character that fans met in the game’s announcement trailer. Well, meet Rivet! She is a Lombax Resistance Fighter from another dimension, where Emperor Nefarious hunts everyone, and anyone, who opposes him. As well as making her a playable character, it looks like the focus of the game will be on Rivet’s dimension. Whether she’ll be the prominent playable character remains to be seen, but I hope Ratchet and Rivet have an equal amount of playtime.
It’s about time there was an update on Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. As a fan of the franchise, this is an exclusive that I have been especially excited for and I think this looks fantastic. It’s not only bright and colourful, but the worlds look interesting whilst still keeping the familiar look of the franchise. While fans were shown the combat that has become a stable to the games, not many of the weapons were properly shown off. So, is it too much to ask for a Sheepinator 2.0 or another Glove of Doom?
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart comes exclusively to the Playstation 5 on 11th June 2021.
